History can be funny

I learned a great story today as I was doing research for my scrapbook.  I’m working on a series of pages on Versailles, and I have a great picture of the Royal Chapel inside the castle.

Apparently, Louis XIV was a very religious man and required that everyone in court show up for Mass on Sunday.  The construction of the chapel was such that the entire court faced the king during the service, and he required absolute silence and decorous behavior.

Well, one day Louis’ guards announced that the king would not be attending Mass.  It was a joke, but when the king did arrive, none of the court ladies were present!
